Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology is unique in that it combines Oral Medicine, which deals with non-surgical management of oral diseases, and Radiology, which employs various imaging modalities, and therapy sits at the interface between Dentistry and Medicine. Oral Medicine and Radiology is considered as the backbone of Dentistry as it deals with the diagnosis of all dental diseases. Conditions managed in Oral Medicine are often chronic and may have a significant psychological, as well as physical, impact on the patient’s quality of life.
The Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology works tirelessly to achieve global standards in Education, Research and Public service. The Faculty in Oral Medicine & Radiology are highly competent who have achieved recognition in academics, research and clinical services.
The department educates undergraduate and postgraduate students in the diagnosis and medical management of orofacial disorders. For this, the Department is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment.
Oral Medicine is involved in patient care, teaching and research involving diagnosis and nonsurgical management of diseases of the orofacial complex and systemic and behavioural disorders that impact oral health, including:
Mucosal diseases
Orofacial pain, including Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD)
Oral complications of systemic illnesses
Dental care for patients with disabilities
Neurosensory and motor disorders
Salivary dysfunction
Oral cancer and complications of cancer therapy
Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology deals with the acquisition and interpretation of radiographic imaging studies performed for diagnosis of treatment guidance for conditions affecting the maxillofacial region. The division of Oral and Maxillofacial Imaging Sciences within the department has emerged as the Pioneer 3D diagnostic imaging centre in the Northern part of India and is First Dental Institute equipped with Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) Unit.
The department has run a very successful much sought after postgraduate programme (MDS) since 2012. The residents trained in the department currently occupy high positions in academics, research both nationally and internationally. Specialization in OMR requires the completion of three year course in the specialty in a Dental Council of India recognized institution. Training includes a thorough knowledge on techniques and interpretation for conventional as well as advanced maxillofacial imaging like Cone Beam Computed Tomography.
